29. 6450 Racism in Canada.

This essay examines racism in Canada with an emphasis on First Nations peoples. Cultural and political history is discussed, as well as the justice system, and its relationship with First Nation peoples. Racism is institutionalized in Canada, and as such poses a difficult problem for erasing and for introducing the changes that might make a difference for non-whites in Canada. 5 pgs. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

30. 6800 Women in Canada 1939-1950: The Impacts of War.

This paper examines the experiences of Canadian women from 1939-1950: throughout and after World War. The war years saw tremendous changes in the social and economic role of women as men were drawn overseas in the armed forces. Many of these gains disappeared in the last half of the decade, after the war. 7 pgs. Bibliography lists 15 sources.

31. 6806 Women's Role in Capitalism.

This paper examines women's position in developed capitalist economies with the emphasis on Canada. It begins by identifying their position as surplus labour and their obligations for domestic labour. IT then examines social and cultural consequences of this economic subordination. 8 pgs. 32. 6881 Women, Work and the Family in Canada.

This essay will argue that the capacity of society to "normalize" exclusion, and ignore the realities of "difference", with respect to the construction of family units is reflected in, and reinforced by, state policies. Indeed, it may be argued that the state is the primary player in ensuring the continuing marginalization of "non-traditional" family units among gays and lesbians, Aboriginals, peoples of colour and single-parent families. 7 pgs. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

33. 6897 Complicating Racism: Africans, Asians, and Whites in Canada.

This essay will explore the complications of discussing race and racism in terms of other groups such as Aboriginals and Asians. I would argue that the prejudice directed against people of African heritage is of a fundamentally different order than that directed at other groups such as Asians. This fact suggests the inadequacies of racism as a broad concept, and indicates the need for a more careful revision of this concept. 6 pgs. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

34. 6902 Transnational Feminism: Token Equality?

Sherene Razack, in her article "Your Place or Mine: Transnational Feminist Collaboration," slaughters sacred cows at a truly phenomenal rate. As this review will demonstrate, her article represents a brilliant and insightful challenge of the tokenism with which liberal, multicultural Canada - and the liberal, multicultural academy - represents women from the "Third World". While the logic of her argument is, I would argue, flawed in spots, the power of her arguments nonetheless reflects a mature feminist discourse that has come of age in our transnational era. Sadly, her arguments - and particularly her analysis of the subtle racism and social constructions of the asylum/refugee process in Northern countries such as Canada - are not likely to be reprinted in the mainstream media where they deserve a wider audience and provoke public debate. 6 pgs. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

35. 7958 Women in Canadian Politics.

This paper addresses the question of women's participation in Canadian politics. Initially, the composition of the current House of Commons and Cabinet is considered. Brief biographies of Grace MacInnis and Therese F Casgrain illustrate the challenges that early female politicians faced in 'a man's world'. Finally, future trends and developments as well as measures to increase the participation of women in politics are examined. 8 pgs. Bibliography lists 9 sources.
